Italian Society Awards Two Students For Excellence
Brookewood students Bella Romero and Elena Aldrette have been honored with the Maria Guarrera Wilmeth Award for excellence in the study of the Italian language. The award, presented at the gala of the Italian Cultural Society of Washington, DC, recognizes outstanding students from Washington-area high schools where Italian is part of the curriculum.
Bella and Elena earned the award with a video—spoken entirely in Italian—comparing the lives of teenagers in Italy and America.
The Wilmeth Award is named for Dr. Maria Guarrera Wilmeth, founding director of the ICS Italian Language Program and a longtime advocate for Italian instruction in Washington-area schools. At the gala, Bella and Elena were accompanied by award-winning Italian teachers, Mrs. Irene Sorensen and Mrs. Donatella Brown, and shared a memorable moment with Maestro Gianandrea Noseda, music director of the National Symphony Orchestra of Washington, DC.
